All about the Stok Kangri Expedition 6153m.

Stok Kangri trek and expedition start from Stok village, just south of Leh. Stok Kangri, with an elevation of 6,153 meters (20,200 feet), is the highest mountain in the Stok Range of the Himalayas in the Leh-Ladakh region of northwest India. The peak is located in Hemis National Park, 12 km southwest of the trailhead at 3,620 meters (11,850 feet) in Stok village, 25 km southwest of the Ladakh capital of Leh. Despite its altitude, Stok Kangri is a popular peak and is often climbed as an initial non-technical foray into high-altitude mountaineering.

However, due to the rapid degradation of Stok Kangri, the Stok Village Committee and ALTOA (All Ladakh Tour Operators Association) have announced a three-year ban on trekking and climbing on Stok Kangri peak. Stok Kangri will remain closed from 2022 to 2023.

  7. Day 7 Base camp to Summit 6153 mts - Base camp 10 - 11 hrs

Depending on weather and snow conditions, we depart early, typically around 1:00 am or 2:00 am. Nighttime is preferred as the conditions are generally better with a clearer sky due to colder temperatures, making the snow harder to walk on. Before embarking, we grab a cup of coffee and pack our lunch bags. Armed with torches, we set out into the night; however, if it’s a full moon night, the moon’s silvery glow will guide our way.

The ascent is strenuous, and in the final stretch, we may use not only ice axes but also crampons and possibly even a rope, depending on the snow conditions. Despite the challenges, as we approach the summit, the hardships are forgotten, and we are surrounded by one of the most beautiful sights in the Himalayas, illuminated by the slowly rising morning sun. In good weather conditions, the Saser group in the Great Karakoram Range, where K2 lies, may be visible.

To bring good fortune, we leave a khatag, a religious scarf, on the mountain top along with prayer flags. After conquering the peak, we descend to the Base camp. By the time we arrive, the only thought running through our minds is diving into our sleeping bags for a welcome rest.

  8. Day 8 Base camp - Stok - Leh 6hrs
