Welcome to Ladakh, stretching from the Glacier to the main Great Himalayas, a land like no other. Your adventure begins with your arrival at Leh Airport, the capital and largest town of Ladakh. The Ashoka Adventure team will meet you at the airport, drive you to the hotel for check-in, and offer a welcome drink. We recommend you relax for the rest of the day to settle in and rejuvenate before we start exploring the stunning landscapes and roads tomorrow. In the afternoon, our supported team leader will brief you about the trip.

In the evening, visit Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace.

    • Shanti Stupa: Perched on the hilltop at Changspa, this stupa was constructed by a Japanese Buddhist organization to commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism and promote world peace.
    • Leh Palace: Built in the 17th century as the residence for Jing Singey Namgyal, it resembles the Potala in Lhasa but is now in ruins. The palace, with nine stories, was deserted when the royal family shifted to Stok Palace in the 1830s.

The Ladakh range is crossed by the Chang-La (18,000 feet/5,475 meters), which, despite its great elevation, is one of the easier passes, remaining open for much of the year, even in winter, except during periods of actual snowfall. Tangtse, just beyond the foot of the pass, has an ancient temple.

  6. Day 6 Pangong – Leh 134kms (4-5hrs one way)

Enjoy the beauty of the lake on its banks while appreciating the changing colors of this fascinating high-altitude lake. Drive back to Leh, and on the way, visit Thiksey and Hemis.

Thiksey: One of the largest and most impressive Gompas, housing several temples with images, stupas, and exquisite wall paintings. It also features a two-storied statue of Buddha in the main prayer hall.

Hemis: Dedicated to Padmasambhava, Hemis offers a series of scenes where lamas, robed in gowns of rich, brightly colored brocade and sporting masks, parade in solemn dance and mime around the huge flagpole in the center of the courtyard. The moan of the eleven feet horns, the boom of drums, and the clash of cymbals add to the spectacle. Founded in the 1630s by Tsang-ras-pa under the royal patronage of Singee Namgyal, Hemis is the largest and richest of the Ladakh Gompas, nestled into the mountainside in the Zanskar range.
