All about the Markha Valley Trek.

The Markha Valley trek is one of the most popular treks in Ladakh. The route winds through picturesque villages nestled in a deep valley, surrounded by towering mountains. The highest point on the trek, Kongmaru La, offers breathtaking views of Kangyatse Peak and the Shang Gorge. Opting for a homestay trek provides an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily life of the locals.

Markha Valley is a part of Hemis National Park, a habitat for various wild animals such as snow leopards, blue sheep, and more. For those seeking a shorter and easier version of the Markha trek, the route from Chilling or Zingchen to Rumbak Valley is a great alternative.

  1. Day 1 Arrival at Leh Airport (11562 ft) 5 – 6 km.(30 minutes Drive Approx)

Welcome to Ladakh, stretching from the glacier to the mighty Great Himalayas—a land like no other. Your adventure begins upon arrival at Leh Airport, the capital and largest town of Ladakh. The Ashoka Adventure team will greet you at the airport, drive you to the hotel for check-in, and offer a welcome drink. We recommend relaxing for the rest of the day, allowing you to settle in and rest before embarking on tomorrow’s exploration of the stunning landscapes and roads. By afternoon, our supported team leader will meet you at the hotel to brief you about the trip.

  2. Day 2 Acclimatisation and Local Sightseeing (45 kms /2 hrs)

Enjoy the essence of Leh’s famous tourist spots during the day. After an early breakfast, visit the centuries-old Leh Palace. Next, drive 40 km east of Leh town to Hemis Monastery, considered the richest monastery in Ladakh. On the way back, make stops at Thiksey Monastery and Shey Palace. Spend the evening at Shanti Stupa. Overnight stay and dinner at the hotel in Leh.

  3. Day 3 Drive From Leh To Chilling( 3400 mts ) 2 hrs by taxi - Trek From Chilling To Skyu 9 km ( 3400 mts) 4 -5 hrs

Start the day with an early breakfast and drive approximately 65 km from Leh town to Chilling. The journey takes around 2 hours. Chilling serves as the starting point of our trek and is renowned for the copper work of its artisans. Explore the small museum here before crossing the river via a suspended basket pulley cable system to commence your trek. The route is a relatively flat walk above the Markha River all the way to Skyu. Along the way, you’ll pass the village of Kaya after another 3 km, and Skyu village is an additional 3 km ahead, nestled between imposing rocky mountains. Overnight at the camp.

  4. Day 4 Skyu to Sara( 3500mts ) 11km 4 hrs

After breakfast at the homestay in Skyu, we will embark on a day trek to Sara village. The trail from here includes a few washout sections, necessitating climbs up and down to navigate the broken parts. Continuing on, the trail leads to a bridge crossing. Two kilometers beyond this bridge lies a clearing known as Narding. Another 3 km ahead is the village of Sara. Overnight stay at the camp.

  5. Day 5 Sara to Markha ( 3700mts ) 4 – 5 hrs

The trail progresses through a series of willow and gorse thickets to a bridge over the Markha River. Trekking alongside the Markha River, we enjoy stunning views of the valley below. Crossing the river, we reach Markha (3800m), the largest village in the valley, comprising approximately 20 houses, an old monastery, and a ruined fort. Overnight stay at the camp.

  6. Day 6 Markha to Hankar ( 4000 mts ) 5-6 hrs

From Markha the country changes and the warm, relatively heavily wooded sections of the lower Markha is left behind. One will be required to cross the river several times as there are no bridges here. The most beautiful part of the trek begins today. The views start to open up today as you enter upper Markha valley. You get amazing views of Kang Yatse, a near-perfect pyramid, on today’s trek. Overnight at camp.

  7. Day 7 Hankar to Nimaling 10 km (4700mts ) 5 – 6 hrs

The trek begins on a well-maintained path with several small inclines and a series of grassy ridges. Along the route, you’ll encounter a series of mani walls (walls carved with Buddhist prayers) and chortens. This high valley in Ladakh, dominated by the Kangyaze peak, is among the most beautiful. Today is another short day of trekking in a spectacular setting. Take it easy, savor the views, but ensure to reach Nimaling early before the weather deteriorates. Overnight stay at the camp.

  8. Day 8 Trek From Nimaling To 15 km ( 5200mts ) Chogo 6 – 7 hrs by trek And Drive To Leh

Today, you will cross to the north of the Markha, ascending to the summit of the highest of the three passes, the 5,306-meter Kongmaru La, offering breathtaking views. Snow peaks surround in every direction, and on a clear day, the giants of the Karakoram, including K2, are visible on the north-western horizon. The trail descends to the Martselang valley, tracing the Martselang stream to the village of Chogdo. Drive back to Leh. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

  9. Day 9 Departure

Departure to the airport with lots of sweet memories from the Markha trek.
